What is sensory Sensitivity?
Many people with special needs also have sensory sensitivities, particularly those with autism spectrum disorders.
Their sensitivity can vary from slight to severe
If someone frequently puts their hands over their ears, they may be sound sensitive
If someone flicks their fingers in front of their eyes they may have visual sensitivity problems.
Some people who have severe sensitivities can present with challenging behaviour and may need their environment modified
Some people who are non verbal or have very little language may have severe sensitivities
